Conference themes Bilbao 2026

Known for its striking blend of tradition and innovation, Bilbao is an internationally renowned cultural destination and a dynamic hub for international meetings and events. The city offers outstanding conference facilities, rich gastronomy, and a welcoming atmosphere shaped by strong community values and quality of life. These themes—wellbeing, social connection, and sustainable urban living—will also be reflected in the conference programme.

The Basque and Spanish community of public health researchers, practitioners and policy makers are very excited to host the 19th EPH Conference and share the work we have been developing for decades in the interconnected areas of urban health, health equity and climate change.

Main theme

Urban and global synergies: shaping the future of public health with climate resilience, equity and innovation

The 19th European Public Health Conference in Bilbao, Spain, will examine key research and policy challenges shaping population health, with a focus on the interconnected forces of urbanization, equity, and climate resilience. As urban populations continue to grow — already around 80% in Europe and projected to exceed two thirds globally by 2050 — the need to translate expanding urban health knowledge into effective, equitable policies has never been greater. At the same time, processes such as urban renewal, segregation, and gentrification, alongside accelerating climate change, are creating complex and evolving challenges for health, equity, and environmental sustainability in cities.

The conference will bring together researchers and practitioners worldwide to address both infectious and non-communicable diseases, strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration, and advance innovative data collection and analysis across cities. By generating policy-relevant evidence and improving how research informs decision-making, the conference aims to support healthier urban populations and reduce health inequities in an increasingly urbanized world.

Subtheme

How do we survive climate change?

More than ever, the climate crisis is demonstrating its profound and far-reaching impact on population health worldwide. From climate-displaced populations to intensifying urban heat waves, floods, and the growing frequency and severity of other extreme climate-related disasters, the intersection of population health and the climate crisis represents a critical, urgent, and rapidly expanding area of research, policy, and public health action.

Subtheme

Health systems and climate change

Health systems are increasingly on the front lines of the climate crisis, both responding to its impacts and contributing to its causes. This plenary will explore how health systems can strengthen resilience to climate-related pressures while reducing their environmental footprint, highlighting opportunities for sustainable transformation that protects population health now and in the future.

Subtheme

The city as a catalyst for change

Today, we know cities as dynamic environments that can both threaten and promote health, shaping how people live, work, and access opportunities. Addressing urban health through the lenses of city environments, social conditions, and inequality can drive meaningful local action and lead to major global public health improvements.

Subtheme

Providing health equity in urban and rural settings

The research, methodologies, and translational challenges encountered in urban health provide valuable insights and practical opportunities for application in rural health contexts. These settings are closely connected, with shared determinants, resources, and policy needs. Urban and rural health are therefore complementary and interdependent — sustainable progress in one cannot be achieved without strengthening the other.

Subtheme

Health by Design: Building Healthy Minds and Bodies

The health impact of urban design, planning, and urban renewal is a key intersectoral and transdisciplinary topic that will be addressed during the conference, highlighting how the built environment shapes health outcomes, wellbeing, and equity across diverse populations and communities.
