Plenary 4: Providing health equity in urban and rural settings – Left-Behind Places, Left-Behind Health

Pedro Gullón MD MPH is the General Director of Public Health and Equity in Spain. During the pandemic, Dr. Gullón worked on evaluating non-pharmacological interventions, studying the social inequalities related to Covid-19, and researching the determinants of vaccination and vaccine hesitancy. He holds a degree in Medicine from the University of Alcalá and is a specialist in Preventive Medicine and Public Health. He also holds a master’s degree in Public Health from the University of Alcalá de Henares and a doctorate in Epidemiology and Public Health from the same university.

Clare Bambra is Professor of Public Health in the . Her research focuses on understanding and reducing health inequalities. Clare is a Fellow of the UK Academy of Medical Sciences, a Fellow of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina; a Fellow of the UK Academy of Social Sciences; and an Honorary Fellow of the UK Faculty of Public Health. She is a founding co-director of Health Equity North, an evidence based policy institute focused on reducing the UK’s regional inequalities. Internationally, Clare is a member of WHO Europe’s Scientific Advisory Group on Health Equity and a senior investigator in CHAIN: The Centre for Global Health Equity Analytics at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.

Massimiliano Mascherini has been Head of the Social Policies unit at Eurofound since October 2019. He joined Eurofound in 2009 as a research manager, designing and coordinating projects on youth employment, NEETs and their social inclusion, as well as on the labour market participation of women. In 2017, he became a senior research manager in the Social Policies unit where he spearheaded new research on monitoring convergence in the EU. In addition to work on the European Quality of Life Survey, he also leads the preparation and analysis of the COVID-19 e-surveys. Previously, he was scientific officer at the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission. He studied at the University of Florence, where he majored in actuarial and statistical sciences and attained a PhD in Applied Statistics. He has been visiting fellow at the University of Sydney and at Aalborg University and visiting professor at the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences.
