Strike and travel information

Delegates attending the 19th European Public Health Conference (10–13 November 2026) should be aware of planned strikes in Spain. The full impact of these strikes on transport, local services and conference activities is not yet known.

General strike – Wednesday, 11 November

A general strike has been called in Spain for 11 November, coinciding with the first day of the main EPH Conference in Bilbao. The extent of the disruption remains uncertain. The strike may affect public transport, local services and other activities in Bilbao.

We recognise that this may raise questions for our conference community, particularly around travel arrangements.

We are working with our local partner and the venue to understand any potential effects on transport and local services. At present, we do not have confirmed details of specific disruption in Bilbao.

Any changes affecting conference activities or arrangements will be communicated through the EPH Conference website.

Rail strikes – Tuesday, 10 and Thursday, 12 November

Separate strikes affecting Renfe train services have been announced on the following dates:

  • Tuesday, 10 November: Full-day rail strike.
  • Thursday, 12 November: Partial stoppages.

These strikes may cause train cancellations, delays or changes to scheduled services.

Delegates planning to travel to or from Bilbao by train should check directly with their rail operator for the latest information and consider alternative arrangements where necessary.

Bilbao Airport is not connected to the city by train. Airport transfers are available by bus, taxi or car, meaning the announced Renfe rail strikes are not expected to directly affect journeys between the airport and the city.

The Bizkaibus A3247 airport bus provides a direct connection between Bilbao Airport and the city centre.

Where to find the latest information

We encourage all delegates to review their travel arrangements and check directly with their transport providers for the latest service information.

  • Air travel: Check with your airline for flight updates.
  • Rail travel: Consult Renfe or your train operator for service changes.
  • Local transport: Check with local bus, tram and metro operators for any disruption.

The EPH Conference team will continue to monitor developments and publish relevant updates on the conference website.
