Alastair Leyland is Chair of the Section Council of the European Public Health Association (EUPHA) and Professor of Population Health Statistics in the School of Health and Wellbeing at the University of Glasgow, Scotland. With a background in statistics, he has been working in public health for the past 37 years and has led a programme of research into health inequalities, funded by the UK’s Medical Research Council, since 2000. He has collaborated with leading academics internationally and is co-Director of the National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR) Global Health Research Unit on Social and Environmental Determinants of Health Inequalities, working in Brazil and Ecuador. Over his career, Alastair has published over 200 peer reviewed articles and attracted €100 million in grant funding. He served as one of the editors of the European Journal of Public Health from 2009 to 2023 and has served on several UK and international funding boards.
