Tuesday 11 November, 09:00 – 17:00 Helsinki time
(with network lunch at 12:30)
Organised by
DEFACTUM
Background
Loneliness and social disconnection are increasingly recognized as critical public health challenges across the lifespan. While a growing body of research has documented their impact on mental and physical health, major gaps remain in our understanding of how to intervene effectively across diverse settings, cultures, and populations.
In this pre-conference, we will explore the latest scientific developments, practical approaches, and conceptual challenges related to loneliness and social disconnection. Presentations will highlight emerging intervention strategies, identify blind spots in current research, and open new theoretical perspectives. Through a combination of talks, facilitated discussions, and small-group exchanges, this event will foster critical dialogue and support the development of new research collaborations. A strong focus will be placed on peer exchange and networking among researchers working on loneliness, social isolation, and connected themes.
This pre-conference is organised in collaboration with leading researchers within the field of loneliness and social disconnection and aims to build a foundation for future shared initiatives and publications.
Objectives
