Lunch symposium: The hidden effects of social security
Friday 14 November, 12:55 – 13:55 (Helsinki time), Room Veranda 1
Organised by:
Social Insurance Institution of Finland (Kela), Research Unit, Finland
Background
This symposium wraps up two major themes presented during the EPH conference. The first theme includes aspects of social security in different settings (work, retirement, mental health). Another theme discusses the subjective experiences of social security system complexity. The aim of this lunch symposium is to explore and elaborate, which kind of hidden effects can be found within the social security, work and health research area.
Description
Join the discussion concerning work capacity among workers of varying ages and the role of social security benefits in supporting participation in working life.
Due to the aging population in welfare societies, extending labour market participation needs to be elaborated. What do we know about working life capacity after midlife? Perceived work ability or capacity may differ among recipients of social security benefits. Mental health problems are most prevalent among younger workers based on sickness allowance trends. However, elderly workers may have increased risk of chronic diseases, and thus processes supporting return to work are needed as well. In addition, there is a lot of administrative burden associated with social security systems. As a consequence, clients may perceive benefit and service systems as complex, which may delay access to services, hinder returning to work and increase risk of multimorbidity.
