Thursday 29 November, 19:30 – 21:00
The Welcome Reception is held at Vodnikov trg square in the historic city centre. Attendance of the Welcome Reception is free of charge but registration is required.
From Monday to Saturday, the square is the site of Ljubljana's Central Market. The square is more than just a place to shop. Traditionally, it has also been a place for the locals to meet and enjoy themselves. The marker stalls offer fresh fruits and vegetables grown by local farmers but also a choice of tropical fruits, dry-cured meat products, flowers and plants. Each Wednesday, the market hosts an organic market where you can get organic food produced by Slovenian farms.
The square was built after the devastating earthquake of 1895, when an old monastery had to be pulled down. The space gained was dedicated for use as an outdoor market. The square was named after the Slovenian poet Valentin Vodnik, whose monument has stood on its site since 1889.
The lower, riverside end of the square is occupied by a monumental colonnade building designed by the architect Jože Plečnik in the 1940s. It is conceived as a two-storey range of riverside market halls following the curve of the river. The small shops located there offer fresh meat, fresh fish, bread and bakery products, dairy products such as cheese and cottage cheese, dried fruits and nuts, homemade olive and pumpkin seed oil and much more.
